Making the Most of Your Engagement Session

Made Weddings with Sarah Katherine Davis

Sarah Katherine Davis is one of the amazing photographers that you will have the chance to interact with at Made Weddings on August 20th at The Henry Clay. Not only does she have the ability to beautifully capture your engagement session to your walk down the aisle, but she is also full of great advice on how to take advantage of the time you have in front of the camera. Having your photo taken can sometimes be intimidating, so we asked Sarah to help you out as you prepare for your engagement session.

The number one thing I tell everyone I photograph is to DRESS COMFY! If you aren’t comfortable it will show in the photos… so if you’ve got an amazing dress but you have to adjust it often, then it’s most likely not the best time to wear it. Similarly, tall heels will limit your movement so consider wearing flats and then changing into heels for the more formal part of your session. I like to have my couples explore, dance, and move around a lot during my engagement shoots, so wearing outfits you can move in (or even throwing on bike shorts under your dress) really gives us the most options to work with. If your heart is set on more dressy photos, I recommend having one casual outfit to play around in, then having a dressy outfit we can do more formal photos in as well to give you the best of both worlds. Talk to your photographer if you have any questions or concerns about what to wear— I’m always happy to help brainstorm with my clients and I know most other photographers are too!

While we’re on the subject of clothing, don’t be too matchy-matchy! You want your outfits to compliment each other without looking like you’re trying too hard to match. Having one person wear a solid color and the other in a pattern works really well when you’re going for a certain color scheme.

Choose a location that makes sense for you as a couple. Talk to your photographer about your interests and what you like to do together,  then brainstorm options as a group. Chances are your photographer knows some locations they have been dying to try that might be a really good fit for you. A few of my favorite session locations lately include a greenhouse (yes, I know they are trendy, but we also all love plants a lot, okay?), a drive-in theater, a bar patio, and a handful of in-home sessions. I LOVE in-home sessions because I think a couple’s personality really shines through in their own space.

Lastly, don’t be stressed or worried about how the images will turn out. If you have a photographer who’s work you love, trust them, go all in, and the images will be AMAZING!
